Welsh First Minister to press Prime Minister Burnham for more powers and rail funding

Wales First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth will take part in the National Economic Council in Glasgow on Friday 30 October and hold a one-to-one meeting with Prime Minister Andy Burnham. He plans to ask for Wales to be treated as a nation rather than a region of England, for more powers, better funding, and quicker delivery of a £14bn rail commitment. He also wants the UK Government to clear a tax problem blocking a weekly child payment pilot called Cynnal.

What does it mean?

Wales wants a bigger say and more money from London. The Welsh leader will push for these changes in person at the meeting, but nothing is agreed yet. Cynnal is a planned weekly payment for poor families in Wales that could be held up by a tax problem.

Who is affected?

Families in Wales who could receive the Cynnal weekly child payment and people who rely on rail services in Wales.
