Water bosses face tougher action over pollution as regulators publish first joint report

Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle is moving to take tougher action against water companies over pollution, following the first joint report by four regulators. Under existing rules, executive bonuses at Southern Water, Thames Water, South West Water and Yorkshire Water are blocked because of one-star ratings, and six Chief Executives face the same ban over Category 1 incidents in 2025. Further details on strengthening the ban are expected in the coming weeks.

What does it mean?

Water companies that pollute rivers and seas or perform poorly could see their bosses lose bonuses. The government also plans to visit problem sites and question the companies directly.

Who is affected?

Executives at underperforming water companies, customers who pay water bills, and people who rely on clean rivers, lakes and seas.

What changes?

Bonuses for executives at one-star water companies and those with Category 1 pollution incidents are already blocked under rules that took effect in 2025; the government plans to strengthen this ban further.
