UK pledges to work with UN members so new technology makes seas safer
Chris Elmore, a UK junior foreign minister, told a UN Security Council meeting on maritime security that the UK wants new technologies such as digital and autonomous systems to make the seas safer. He said the UK will work with other UN members and industry, and pointed to new international rules for remotely controlled and autonomous commercial ships. He also warned that uncrewed weapons are becoming easier for states and non-state groups to use against shipping.
What does it mean?
Ships are becoming more digital, and some can now sail without crew on board, so the UK wants clear rules to keep them safe. The worry is that cyberattacks and cheap weapons could be aimed at ships, which could disrupt trade and push up prices for food and fuel.
Who is affected?
Shipping companies, seafarers and countries that depend on sea trade.
