Shorter breast radiotherapy trial passes 1,000 patients as Ashley Dalton named cancer adviser
More than 1,000 women have joined a UK trial testing whether breast radiotherapy can be cut from three weeks to five days, which could spare patients about 10 hospital visits. The trial runs at 39 hospitals and adds a targeted extra dose to help stop the cancer coming back. Separately, Ashley Dalton MP, who is living with metastatic breast cancer, has been appointed adviser on delivering the National Cancer Plan.
What does it mean?
If the shorter treatment proves as safe as the standard course, some breast cancer patients could need far fewer trips to hospital. The trial is still running, so the result is not yet known.
Who is affected?
Women with breast cancer who may need radiotherapy, and women invited for breast screening.
