Regulators issue first joint report on water company performance

Four English and Welsh regulators have released their first combined report on how water companies are performing. Drinking water quality was strong, but pollution incidents and missed environmental improvement work were flagged as weak points. The Environment Agency warned it will prosecute or fine the worst performers.

What does it mean?

Your tap water is still very safe, with 99.97% of tests passing. But water companies are still letting too much pollution into rivers and seas, and some promised fixes are late. Regulators may now take companies to court or fine them if they do not improve.

Who is affected?

Households who rely on tap water, and people who use rivers and coastlines.
