Overseas firms winning big UK defence contracts must put equal value back into Britain
Foreign companies that win UK defence contracts worth £50 million or more will have to deliver benefits to the UK up to the same value. These can take the form of British jobs and apprenticeships, new or expanded factories, investment in UK suppliers, technology transfer, or more UK-made components. A new central Offset Authority will run the policy, which was announced at BAE Systems Scotstoun in Glasgow.
What does it mean?
If a foreign company wins a British defence deal of £50 million or more, it must bring equal value back to the UK through jobs, factories, training, or technology. The rule is meant to make sure British workers and businesses benefit from defence spending.
Who is affected?
British workers, apprentices, and UK suppliers, along with overseas defence firms bidding for UK contracts.
