Japan's new home construction starts fell 2.7% in September from a year earlier

Japan's land ministry released its September building construction statistics on October 30. New home construction starts dropped 2.7% compared with September last year, and fell 5.2% from August after adjusting for seasonal patterns. Among private non-residential buildings, factory construction rose, but offices, shops and warehouses declined, so overall construction in that category went down.

What does it mean?

Fewer new homes and offices were started in September than a year before, so the building market is slowing in those areas. Factories were the one bright spot, as more of them were started.

Who is affected?

Homebuyers, renters, developers, and builders working on housing and commercial property.
