Japan certifies 122 more Natural Symbiosis Sites, bringing total to 700
Japan's Ministry of the Environment has certified 122 more areas as Natural Symbiosis Sites in its second round for fiscal 2026, bringing the national total to 700. These are privately managed areas such as corporate forests, rural woodlands and urban green spaces that protect nature. The certifications were approved by the relevant government ministers after expert review.
What does it mean?
Japan is rewarding private groups and local communities that look after nature in their own areas, such as company forests or village woodlands. Once an area is officially approved, it counts toward Japan's goal of protecting at least 30% of land and sea by 2030. The country now has 700 such approved areas.
Who is affected?
Companies, NPOs, municipalities, and local groups that manage land or habitats for nature in Japan.
