Italy extends Barbera d'Asti consortium's duties to Calosso wine
Italy's agriculture ministry has issued a decree dated 21 October 2026 that expands the role of the Consorzio Barbera d'Asti e Vini del Monferrato. A consorzio is a producers' association that looks after a regional wine label. The consortium now also takes on promotion, protection, supervision and consumer information for the Calosso DOC, a protected wine designation of origin.
What does it mean?
Calosso is a protected local wine name, and the group that looks after Barbera d'Asti wines now also looks after Calosso. For wine buyers, this means the consortium will help make sure Calosso labels are genuine and that the wine is promoted and described properly.
Who is affected?
Wine producers who make Calosso DOC wine, and consumers who buy it.
