German top court judge Christian Grüneberg retires after 20 years

Christian Grüneberg, a judge at Germany's Federal Court of Justice, is retiring at the end of 31 October 2026 after reaching the mandatory retirement age. The court says he spent more than 20 years there, with most of that time on the XI Civil Senate, which handles banking, stock exchange and securities cases. He was also deputy chair of that senate until August 2026.

What does it mean?

A senior German court judge who handled banking and securities cases is leaving his post at the end of 31 October 2026. Retirement at this age is mandatory, so the seat on the XI Civil Senate will need to be filled by someone else.

Who is affected?

Parties and lawyers whose cases were before the XI Civil Senate, and colleagues on the court.
