France sets new capacity mechanism rules, replacing March 2026 order
France has published a new order setting the rules of its capacity mechanism, the system that pays power sources to stay available so electricity supply stays secure. The order was signed on 26 October 2026 and published in the Official Journal on 30 October 2026. It replaces the earlier order of 18 March 2026 on the same rules.
What does it mean?
Electricity suppliers, power plant operators and grid companies in France now work under a new set of rules for the capacity mechanism, which pays providers to keep enough power available. The new rules take effect the day after publication, so they apply from 31 October 2026.
Who is affected?
Electricity consumers, electricity suppliers, operators of power generation, storage and demand-reduction capacity, and grid operators in France.
What changes?
Before, the 18 March 2026 order set the capacity mechanism rules; now the 26 October 2026 order sets them and repeals the earlier one.
