Estonia sets up a state translation database open to the public

Estonia has adopted a regulation creating a state translation database, called the translation gateway, on 29 October 2026. Eesti Keele Instituut runs it as administrator, while eight state bodies share responsibility for its data. The public part will publish anonymised translation memories, which are stored earlier translated sentences that help keep terms consistent.

What does it mean?

Estonian state offices and the public can now use one central online place for translating between Estonian and other languages. Public users can draw on anonymised translation memories, which store earlier translations so that the same terms are translated the same way.

Who is affected?

State offices that handle translation work, such as prisons and the police, and members of the public who translate Estonian text.
