Environment Ministry Urges Wildlife and Scenery Checks for Choshi Offshore Wind Plan

Japan's Ministry of the Environment has sent its formal opinion on an early-stage environmental plan for a large offshore wind project off Choshi City in Chiba Prefecture, proposed by Tokyo Electric Power Company Renewable Power. The project could reach 420,000 kW across roughly 4,000 hectares. The ministry asks the developer to study and reduce harm to seabirds such as the common murre, to marine life from cloudy water, and to views from nearby scenic spots in Suigo-Tsukuba National Park.

What does it mean?

A big wind farm planned off Chiba's coast has passed an early government review, but the developer still has to change its plans. The ministry wants careful checks on birds, sea life and views before the project moves forward.

Who is affected?

Seabirds and marine life near the planned site, residents and visitors who value the views from nearby scenic areas, and the developer.
