Antarctic killer whale data feeds global ocean migration corridor map
A 2026 report on the Protecting Blue Corridors initiative credits Italian researcher G. Lauriano of ISPRA with killer whale monitoring data gathered during Antarctic fieldwork. That data helped map how orcas move and use key habitats in polar waters within a global model of ocean migration routes. The project's maps and details are published online at bluecorridors.org.
What does it mean?
Scientists tracked killer whales in the Antarctic and used that information to help build a worldwide map of where marine animals travel. The map is meant to show which ocean routes matter most so they can be protected across national borders.
Who is affected?
Marine wildlife such as killer whales and conservation planners who use ocean migration data.
